Robert Ascroft

Photographer, Musician, Artist. Creating sensorial, cinematic experiences.

Robert Ascroft is one of the most sought after Photographers working today. Moving seamlessly through the landscape of Entertainment Key Art, Celebrity Portrait, Sports, Fine Art, Fashion, Beauty and Advertising assignments. His work has been described as Richly Cinematic Beauty Lighting that is crafted and precise with an innate sensibility to capture an intimate moment. On set he creates an atmosphere of comfort and professionalism that has endeared his work to numerous global brands. His esteemed client list includes Netflix, Hulu, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Rolling Stone, New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar,  Estee Lauder, Universal Music, SONY, Rolex, PUMA, Reebok, Proenza Schouler, Narciso Rodriguez, T Magazine and many more.

As a former Rochester native, Ascroft grew up working at Kodak learning firsthand how to produce film. His experience led him to work in NYC and LA, shooting and filming for renowned commercial & entertainment clients. When he is not on set he can be found in the recording studio composing music. His combined love for music and movement is reflected in custom-composed tracks for his videos. Ascroft created Intervals, a multimedia project blending his music composition with photography.

Ascroft’s fascination with building sensory experiences extends to his personal projects. In MILK, featuring HBO Westworld’s Angela Sarafyan, he constructed a glass case filled with milk to emphasize the fluid quality of Sarafyan’s movement when submerged. From designing intricate sets, to construction- he is involved in every element needed to create an immersive experience.

Robert dedicates any spare time to creative collaborations with athletes, dancers, and other artists. He can be filming an Olympian in-studio one afternoon, or shooting musicians out in a field the next day. Ascroft is a family man and bases himself out of New York and Los Angeles, but also works on locations around the world.

Nice working with you again. -RA 2.19.24 | One of the great joys of my career is the opportunity to spend time with the most inspiring and unique personalities on the scene today. @sashacolby is a force to be reckoned with. Lovely shoot with you at the 75th Emmy Awards Official Photo Booth. Many more to come. 11.20.23 | I enjoyed working with Harvey Guillen on this project. We talked for over a year about doing a shoot together. We finally got it together and I am thrilled with the 3 covers, video, interview and accompanying photo spread. He has an inspirational story. Also just plain fun to be around. Thank you Harvey. What We Do In The Shadows is one of the best shows on television. There is nothing like it. FX does it again. 6.30.23 | I spent a couple days photographing the cast of SHRINKING // AppleTV+ #luketennie // #jessicawilliams I appreciate the cast and my friends at the Television a Academy for being onboard with the idea of doing something different. Standard PR imagery is everywhere and it was nice to break the mold for this series and do something we will all remember. 🙏🏻 12.21.22 | I photographed Sean Hayes a few months ago for his new play Good Night, Oscar. This show is going to be a must see on Broadway. The Chicago previews had some of the best reviews I’ve read in years. We had the pleasure of hearing a few lines while Sean was getting into the character of Oscar Levant. It is always a treat to see the transformation into character of a brilliant actor up close. 8.11.23 | Hayden’s solo acoustic music conjures the sounds of John Fahey and Bert Jansch. What a joy to make some iconic photographs together. //////// .via Hayden’s Instagram: Portraits of me taken by the legendary @robertascroft in Los Angeles last week. These were taken the day before the last show of my first tour. I’m so genuinely blown away by how they turned out. I was feeling a lot of different things that day with the tour coming to an end and I think Robert captured those feelings perfectly. When I saw these for the first time I texted Robert and said “these feel like James Dean doing press photos for Giant in 1955 weeks before he died” That honestly sounds a bit grim, but it kind of matches the feeling Robert brought out. Thanks for taking the time to shoot me Robert! These are so genuinely beautiful. 5.11.21 | Shoots of this magnitude take a village to create with weeks of preparations down to the smallest of details. I am supported by the talented artists and professionals on all aspects of this shoot... THANK YOU ALL for your expertise, work around the clock, blood, sweat, tears, vision + commitment to your craft. You know who you are + I look forward to collaborating with you again. I told @elisabethmossofficial the first time we worked together that I would go anywhere in the world for her. Who would have thought it would mean going to Toronto for 3 weeks to quarantine during a global pandemic!? Thank you for trusting me to help make this one reality. I still would go anywhere for you :-) 9.14.20 | Had the great opportunity to reconnect with one of my favorite actors and all around great guy Mr. Ethan Hawke. He and I had worked together before on a Rolling Stone Cover. I love when I work with people who are collaborative, engaged and nurturing to the creative process. He stars in the upcoming THE GOOD LORD BIRD on Showtime which is going to be a must see. I arrived at his home in Connecticut during the Pandemic with one assistant and an SUV full of gear. We ended up shooting the entire session with one light. It was the most fun I have had on a shoot in ages. He and his wife Ryan Hawke welcomed us into their world for the afternoon... Now I am happy to share the results with you. 9.9.20 | Intervals is my collection of original Ambient Music. I describe this music as CINEMATIC SONIC ARCHITECTURE. It is meditative + serene for these troubled times. While in isolation I collaborated with producer Jared Artaud who is one half of the famed indie band THE VACANT LOTS @thevacantlots. Thankful he was available as he just completed Production on the posthumous release for legendary frontman Alan Vega of the band SUICIDE when we teamed up // @officialalanvega // 8.28.20 | As a photographer I study light, form and shape within my images. This series represents a selection from of my studies on these subjects. Using only silk material covering a model I allude to both Fashion and Beauty while at the same time excluded these vanities from the equation out of necessity during the Covid-19 quarantine. The result are images that feel both modern and sleek while shrouded in mystery. Often times with my work I reference sculpture and in this instance that of Brancusi, Rodin, Serra and Koons. The latter of whom often works in metallics was particularly of interest to my SILK SCULPTURES series. 5.5.20 | Entertainment has been one source of relief from the onslaught of bad news incoming to our smart phones, computers and television screens. For reprieve I will share the following series of images created before the world turned upside down. ---- These images were created in multiple cities over several days for the FX/HULU show Mrs America. 11.22.19 | Jason and Alfre were not available on the same day. This is always a unique challenge to get the perspective, lighting and performances to work together to make a realistic composite. I enjoy this challenge and have done it many times in my career. Most of this session however was going to be single photographs so I was able to play a little once I had the doubles finished. The main set is a nod the the show without being a literal translation of their sets. I often work in this manner where I will give a nod to the project and allow the viewer the chance to connect the dots.
