Dean Wareham: Duchess (Official Music Video)
Robert Ascroft directs the music video for Dean Wareham’s song Duchess off of his latest record I Have Nothing to Say to the Mayor of L.A. Read below for the story behind the artist and the record:
“Indie Rock legend Dean Wareham's latest record I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY TO THE MAYOR OF L.A. has made it to the top of many critics lists for 2021. The cover song Duchess (1969. Scott Walker) has been a favorite of mine for ages. His version of the song is a perfect fit for this record.
I spoke with Dean about making a short film/music video for the track that was inspired by 1960's visual style. We deliberated over who will portray the "Duchess" in the video and in the end felt it was best not to have an actor play this role at all. This decision kept focus solely on Dean and his brilliant performance. No stranger to being in front of a movie camera, Dean has appeared in several films by Noah Baumbach including Mistress America, Marriage Story, Frances Ha and While We're Young.
This release marks another feather in the cap of in Dean's storied career starting in the 90s fronting Galaxie 500, then moving on to Luna and Dean and Britta. The latter with is equally talented wife Britta Phillips who plays bass in Luna as well as vocals on most of their musical iterations. As a solo artist this is the second release and is some of his finest music recorded to date.
